Our History

A home grown African agency

In 1989, after a successful career in corporate South Africa, Robyn de Villiers, chairman and CEO of Burson-Marsteller Africa channeled her entrepreneurial drive into creating a new communications agency, Arcay Communications, based in Johannesburg.

The start of an African network

In 1994 she began building a formal African communications agency network, known as Arcay Communications Africa. In establising a trusted communications brand, Robyn and her team sought out in-country agencies and professionals with good credentials, working with global and local PR institutes and partners in neighbouring countries and taking guidance from South African embassies to find the best local firms.

A global network partner and parent company

In 2007, Arcay Communications partnered with Burson-Marsteller in an exclusive affiliate relationship spanning the African continent and, in 2011, became a 51%-owned subsidiary of the global communications firm. 2014 was a momentous year for the company with its re-branding as Burson-Marsteller Africa. This completed the integration into the global Burson-Marsteller group.

“We recognise the importance of the African continent, one of the world’s strong emerging markets, to our clients’ global business strategies and to our global business. We have an on-going commitment to ensuring that we are where our clients need us to be, ready to offer them strategic communications services that will contribute to their overall business success.”
